AN OPEN LETTER TO TOGBE AFEDE XIV-A FATHER IN DISGUISE

Dear Togbe,

It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter. I know it may not reach even your front desk but if it miraculously does, and you get to read it, kindly consider it an advice from a son who loves his father but not an attempt to run down your personality.

Before I offload the heaviness of my heart, let me congratulate you on your election as the President of the highest office of Chieftaincy in Ghana -the National House of Chiefs. You have made my Home region (Volta) proud.

With all this power, I will be very disappointed if your critics call you incompetent thus my decision to draw your attention to some realities so you can use your power to change the situation and shame them.

Togbe, please indulge me to take you to the Holy Bible. Matthew 7:9-11 says: “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?  If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

This is not a sermon but with my reference to this verse I want to believe that after reading this letter, you will not give your children stone and snake but the   bread and fish I am asking for on their behalf.

Togbe, your youth are on the street without work. Cost of living in Volta is the highest in the entire country. If for nothing at all, I have travelled to almost seven out of the 10 administrative regions of Ghana and I have first hand information.

Using the food basket, comprising kenkey, meat, Gari and roasted plantain (Kofi broke man) in calculating inflation, Volta region has the highest inflation at almost 21%. It may not be scientific but do not undermine its potency.

Transportation fare to and fro short distances in our region is twice more of that of other regions. A three hour journey to Accra from Ho is shorter in distance (km) compared with almost five hours drive from Accra to Takoradi but the fare is almost the same.

Another unscientific way of drawing conclusion but I do not need Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia , the Vice President –elect  to tell me the cost difference in transport in the regions I have visited compared to my home region. The living standard of your people is poor and development in the region is nothing to write home about.

I know you still cannot fathom this letter and spirit behind it but you will soon come to terms by the time you finish reading the last word.

Togbe, let me at this point take you down memory lane and remind you of what made the people of Asogli chose you among equally qualified citizens of Ho, at least published on your own website, http://www.togbe-afede.com.

“On October 4, 2003, the Kingmakers of Asogli State gave the people the King of their choice. The people, concerned about their falling living standards and the virtual absence of development activities in their communities, desired someone who will provide the needed inspiration and leadership for the development of Asogli State.”

In your acknowledgment speech to your subjects these were some of your words:

“I will work hard to build a new Asogli that is full of opportunity for all. The new King also had something for our children: Our children are the future. I will institute programmes to ensure that their needs are provided for, to help them to develop their character and self-appreciation, and to teach them to understand and uphold the principles of true citizenship, lest they grow into apathetic spectators.”

But a decade and three years down the line, this is a sharp contrast to reality.

I wish I had a chance to score you and if I did I would not hesitate to give you 40 percent which is absolute failure per any rating in exams. It could be worse if I ask West African Examination Council (WAEC) to assess you.

Thirteen years into your kingship, Volta has nothing to be proud of as coming from a father to a son. All your countless assets scattered across the length and breadth of this country, you have disserted your home.

We know you have attained a lot as an individual but a good man leaves inheritance for his children’s children says the Bible. How do we identify your assets in other regions and claim ownership since they are out of reach?

Without any iota of reservation, you are almost failing us as a people if not already failed in absolute terms. If your kingship were to have limited number of four years as the presidency, I would have led a campaign against you.

Togbe, according to your website, you are a member of the board of directors of the following organizations:
•   Aluworks Ltd., an aluminum rolling mill

•   Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club Ltd., Ghana’s premier football club

•   Bank of Ghana, Ghana’s central bank

•   Navigator Communications & Technology Co., Ltd.

•   Pioneer Kitchenware Ltd. (Chairman), an aluminum hollowware manufacturer

•   SAS Finance Group Ltd., an investment banking firm

•   SAS Investment Management Ltd., an asset management firm

•   Strategic Initiatives Ltd. (Chairman), a portfolio and private equity investment firm

•   Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Ltd., an independent power generating company

You are also the founder of Navigator Communications & Technology Co., Ltd. and co-founder of Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Ltd.

But how many of these firms have their branches, yes! I mean their branches in the Volta Region? I humbly need answers please.

Togbe, you are a man of great repute. We, your children want to honor you; this can only be possible if we find a reason to. I will be very unfair to you if I do not list few of our expectations from you as a father.

Please open branches of the numerous companies you serve on as chair here in the Volta Region.

Set up Asogli fund to assist the brilliant but needy child.

Hold frequent lecture on the various university campuses you have in the region.

Convert one of the waterfalls in the region to a power generating technology.

Revisit your five year development plan for Volta.
Volta can now boast of three Universities, an aerodrome and many infrastructures. The eastern corridor road is moving on steadily. All we need from you as a father is job opportunities. Put pressure on government to start the Keta oil exploration.

In the nut shell, Togbe please turn your attention to your home region and make it greater if not greatest than you came to meet it. Your current position is a great honour to us and this must live with us until your term as President of the National house of chief is over.

See this four year as President-elect Nana Addo, aiming to accomplish his mouth watery promises to the people of Ghana and so you must act. You are a respected King to whom we all bow and pay our homage; please don’t let us and our ancestors down. We have a song to sing in my next write up since am short of space.

You ascended the great throne upon my entry into Senior High School, I have completed teacher training college and in my 7th year of teaching.  I am currently in Ghana Institute of Journalism so as to achieve my ultimate goal of being the “Voice for the voiceless”.

I look forward to a fruitful discussion if the opportunity is given. I am a youth and son of the land (Volta) and you are my father in disguise.
