The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) has initiated moves to establish a single identification system and an integrated national database to enhance the growth and development of the country.
By this, the commission seeks to streamline the activities of the various bodies responsible for issuing national identification cards for the nation to use a single, timely and accurate data.
The move is part of NDPCs long-term 40-year development plan for Ghana by 2057. In view of that, a roundtable discussion has been held to identify and ascertain the degree of linkages between the various bodies responsible for issuing national IDs.
Chairman of the NDPC, Professor Kwesi Botchwey, said the move by the commission was part of its plans since its establishment. According to him, the establishment of a single identification system would go a long way to enhance planning and development, research, security as well as improve business operations.
Present at the stakeholders forum were representative from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Ghana Immigration Service and Passport Office, the Ghana Police Service, National Household Registry, Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), and the Controller and Accountant General’s Department.
Others were from the Births and Deaths Registry, Data Protection Commission, Electoral Commission, National Health Insurance Authority (NHIS) and the National Identification Authority (NIA).
