TO: SRCs/GRASAG OF MEMBER INSTITUTIONS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
                                                     OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE UTILITY BILL BROUHAHA.

The National Union of Ghana Students, NUGS and the Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students, GNUPS, wish to officially inform its memberships in all public tertiary institutions that the Status quo regarding the payment of Utility bills by students as agreed with government stands, and remains the same — students are NOT TO PAY.           
                           
A meeting held yesterday, Tuesday 31st May, 2016; at the Ministry of Education consolidated the decision that public tertiary students are NOT TO PAY for utilities.                     

The meeting follows after a series of such meetings earlier with all the stakeholders including NUGS and GNUPS that are part of the Working Committee of the Utility Bills in Tertiary education.

In attendance were Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education , ECG,  GWCL,  VC Ghana, PRINCOF and some other stakeholders including NUGS and GNUPS

At the meeting, we agreed that Government should continue to pay the Utility bills  for students in the Public Tertiary Institutions implying that NO head of such institutions is allowed to breach the directive of the Government by Charging Students for Utility bills in the ensuing academic year.     

Consequently, institutions that have started charging students ILLEGALLY should respectfully STOP.

We will in due time give students full briefing while waiting for an official communication from the Government to all stakeholders as early as possible.

We wish to use this medium to commend our members for their patience and confidence in us to fight on for the good of students.

Assuredly, we remain strongly resolute, ever prepared and fully committed to protecting the interest of students of the Republic of Ghana and ensuring that Education remains A Right and not a privilege.
