COMMUNITY INSTITUTIONS
Is the group of people set up to see to the
needs of the society. Examples are Family,
District Assembly, National Government,
Religious organizations traditional authority.

THE FAMILY
Is a group of people united by blood, marriage
or adoption.
types of family
There are two types of family, namely Nuclear
and Extended family.
Nuclear – This is the family made up of
mother, father, children or without children. Is
the most common family unit found all over
the world.
Extended – Is the most common one in Ghana.
Is a family type that embraces husband, wife,
children, parents of spouse, brothers, sisters,
grandparents etc.
Responsibilities of Parents
1.They provide basic needs for the family.
2.They provide love and affection to the family
members.
3.It is also the responsibility of the parents to
procreate.
4.They provide health needs for the family.
5.They provide children educational needs.
6.They inculcate moral values in the members
of the family.
Duties of children in the family
1.They help in fetching water and sweeping the
compound
2.It is the duty of the child to respect the
elders .
3.Children go on errands.
4.They empty the rubbish bin at the refuse
dump.

IMPORTANT OF EXTENDED FAMILY
1.Aged and physical challenged are cared for
by family members.
2.There is mutual help among members,
especially to needy members.
3.The extended family is more evident in the
area of socialization.
4.There is emotional and moral support by
relatives in times of trouble, sickness, death
etc.
5.There is no orphan in the extended family
system.

TRADITIONAL AUTHORITY
These usually refers to the traditional council
that is made up of various chief and elders.
They play administrative, legislative,
preservative and judicial roles in the society.
Contributions of Traditional Authorities to
the Development of Society.
1.They contribute to education through the
institution of Education Fund and scholarship
for brilliant but needy students in their area.
2.They explain government policies to their
people.
3.They are the custodians of Culture heritage
of the people and hand it down to the youth.
4.They make and enforce rules, regulations and
bye-laws to direct the behavior of people.
5.They mobilize their people for development
projects.

RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATION
They are group of people belonging to a
particular system of belief in God or gods who
meet and do thing together.
Contributions of Religious Organizations to
the Development of society
1.They contribute immensely to formal
education.
2.They also contribute immensely in the area
of moral education by inculcating in their
members desirable attitudes, behaviors and
values.
3.They also contribute in the field of health by
building hospitals and donating drugs.
4.They organize literacy classes for their less
fortunate illiterate members to help them read
and write their local languages.

NATIONAL GOVERNMENT
The structure of National Government
1.Central Government
2.Regional Councils
3.a)Metropolitan Assemblies
b)Municipal Assemblies
c)Distinct Assemblies
4.Town/Zonal/Urban council
5.Unit
There are three arm of government namely :
1.Executive
2.Legislature
3.Judiciary
They work independenty within the law, but
relate with one another in order to let
harmony prevail.
The role of government in the Development
of Society
1.Government provide health facilities and
train doctors and nurses in other to give
people good health.
2.Government provide security or protection
through various security agencies such as
Armed forces
3.It again provide basic needs for the citizens.
4.Government provide educational needs by
building schools and providing teachers and
teaching and learning materials.
5.It also provide infrastructure to assist
transportation of goods and services.

COMPOSITION OF THE DISTRICT ASSEMBLY
1.The District Chief Executive
2.The members of parliament in the particular
district
3.Members representing the electoral unit
within the District.
4.Members not more than 30% of all members
of the District Assembly representing
traditional authorities and other interest
groups in the district.

FUNCTION OF THE DISTRICT ASSEMBLY
1.It formulate programmes and strategies for
the effective mobilization and utilization of
human, physical, financial and other resources
in the district.
2.It initiate programmes for the development,
improvement and management of human
settlement and the environment in the district .
3. It cooperate with appropriate national and
local security agencies for the maintenance of
security and public safety in the district.
4.It is responsible for the overall development
of the district.
Problems of the District Assembly
1.The Common Fund from the central
government is insufficient.
2.Inadequate trained staff or personnel to do
the work.
3.The assembly is unable to enough generate
fund for development project.
4.The assembly is unable to develop clear
plans for the development of the district.

SOLUTIONS
1.Funds should be prudently manage.
2.Politicians should desist from dictating to
Assemblies.
3.Plans for the district should be clear and
unambiguous.
4.The revenue or tax net should be widened in
other to raise more funds.
5.Incentives and good working conditions
should be provided to attract qualified
personnel.
