Executive Secretary of the Ghana Anti-
Corruption Coalition(GACC) Linda Ofori-Kwafo
has said that the John Mahama-led governing
National Democratic Congress (NDC) has not
performed well in tackling corruption in the
country.
“On a scale of 1 to 10, I don’t think I’ll give
any more than Transparency International’s
assessment of Ghana, and will still go below an
average of 5,” she said in an interview with Joy
FM on Wednesday 24 February 2016.
Ms Ofori-Kwafo said the government has failed
to address major acts of corruption allegedly
perpetrated by key personalities and
institutions, adding that authorities are only
focused on “tackling small fishes, but the big
fishes, we are yet to hear about what
happened to them”.
According to her, tougher punishment is not
dished out to deter public officials from
corruption.
“What happened to the police recruitment
scandal? It looks like a no-go area. To what
extent have we resolved matters? Has someone
been found culpable? How long are they going
to take?”
She charged the President to talk about the
GHS 3.6 million bus branding contract and also
address issues regarding the AMERI power
deal.
“I will like the president to talk about Smarttys
because we are concerned about the methods,
ways, and means of dealing with corruption
nowadays. Once there is an admission of
wrongdoing…payment or repayment is not the
solution to the issue.
“Someone should be held responsible for this.
We are supposed to punish people who engage
in corruption,” she stressed.
President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled
to present the State of the Nation address on
Thursday 25 February 2016 and one area he is
expected to tackle is corruption.
